Arthur D. Little publishes Product Development DX, a book recommending how DX-aware technology and product development should be

Arthur D. Little Japan, Inc. (Head Office: Minato-ku, Tokyo; Managing Partner Japan: Yusuke Harada; hereafter "ADL") published "Product Development DX: Re-Designing 'Manufacturing' Management" on 10 January 2024 (Wednesday) from Toyo Keizai Inc. The book focuses on the two axes of "product" and "process" perspectives in the current era of technological and product development processes undergoing a period of change due to the evolution of software and digital transformation (DX). It also outlines how to realize value creation starting from technology and product development.

Based on the premise that technology and product development is the main mission of management, this book explains in seven chapters the tools and processes of evolution based on examples from the automobile, consumer electronics, aircraft and industrial equipment industries, and also describes how DX should be applied in technology and product development to utilize digital technology and improve profitability. It also makes recommendations on the ideal way forward for DX-oriented technology and product development.

■ Table of Contents
Introduction: The background and importance of DX in product development
Chapter 1: Evolutionary trends in product development
Chapter 2: Product development DX tools and processes
Chapter 3: Evolution of the "product" perspective: Modular Design
Chapter 4: Evolution of the process perspective: Front-loading
Chapter 5: Further evolution of the process perspective: Agile Development
Chapter 6: Advanced information use
Chapter 7: Product development DX in the software era

■ Recommendations on DX-aware technology and product development and mechanisms for profit transformation.
Industry 4.0" is proposed, which aims to build smart factories through automation in the manufacturing industry using cutting-edge technologies such as IoT, cloud computing and cognitive computing, and to build new business models through the use of various types of data. and the response to digital transformation (DX), which aims to digitalize traditional manufacturing processes, is growing stronger by the day. However, even if a company builds a competitive position through its business model and transformation, the risk of renewed exposure to competition from other companies is high unless the company's raison d'être - its technology and product development capabilities - is enhanced.

Under these circumstances, this publication does not deal with technology and product development in isolation, but rather considers how technology and product development should be conducted with an awareness of digital transformation, while incorporating a digital perspective, which has long since become indispensable in technology and product development, as well as discussing mechanisms for improving profitability through increased development efficiency and product value. The mechanisms for improving profitability through increased development efficiency and product value will also be discussed.
